GiG Software has completed its €16.4 million acquisition of an 80% stake in 888AFRICA, marking a significant strategic return to operating consumer gambling brands after several years focused primarily on supplying technology to other operators.

The transaction closed on October 1, 2026, after all conditions were satisfied. GiG paid €6.1 million at completion, with the remaining €10.3 million due in installments over the next ten months.

The deal gives GiG control of a rapidly growing African gambling business with operations in Mozambique, Angola and Tanzania. According to GiG, 888AFRICA has grown from a startup launched in 2022 to approximately $50 million in annualized NGR [Net Gaming Revenue], with second-quarter 2026 revenue increasing 30% year over year.

The acquisition itself is important, but the bigger story is GiG's strategic shift. The company has spent the past few years positioning itself primarily as a B2B [Business-to-Business] gambling technology provider. It will now simultaneously supply platforms to other gambling companies while controlling a significant B2C [Business-to-Consumer] gambling operation of its own.

Why GiG Is Returning to B2C Gambling

GiG's current structure is the result of a major transformation of the business.

The company previously operated both consumer gambling brands and technology services, but began separating those activities several years ago. Its former consumer-facing division was ultimately sold to Betsson in 2020, while GiG later separated its media and platform businesses.

The 888AFRICA acquisition therefore represents a notable return to direct gambling operations.

GiG CEO Richard Carter described the deal as a "transformational step" for the company when the transaction was announced, arguing that it provides immediate scale and exposure to high-growth regulated markets.

The remaining 20% of 888AFRICA will continue to be owned by Evoke, the gambling group behind brands including William Hill and 888.

888AFRICA Gives GiG Immediate Scale

Rather than building a new casino and sportsbook operation from scratch, GiG is acquiring an established business.

888AFRICA launched in 2022 and has expanded across several African markets. The company subsequently strengthened its position through the acquisition of BetLion, which added locally developed technology and additional market experience.

GiG says 888AFRICA currently holds a leading position in Mozambique alongside licensed operations in Angola and Tanzania.

Africa is also becoming increasingly important to international gambling companies because of its young population, growing smartphone adoption and strongly mobile-led betting environment.

The acquisition gives GiG immediate access to those markets while potentially providing a base for further expansion.

Owning the Operator and the Technology

There is another reason the deal could prove strategically important.

GiG does not simply own a gambling operator. It also develops the technology used by gambling operators.

The company provides casino platform infrastructure, sportsbook technology and related services to third-party businesses. Following the acquisition, it can potentially deploy more of that technology inside 888AFRICA itself.

GiG has already identified platform consolidation as one of the potential synergies from the transaction.

That could create an unusually direct feedback loop. Instead of developing technology exclusively for clients, GiG can observe how its systems perform inside a gambling operation it controls.

The company could gain greater visibility into player acquisition, payments, KYC [Know Your Customer] processes, retention, personalization and customer behavior, while potentially using those insights to improve the technology it sells to other operators.

However, GiG has not described 888AFRICA as a formal technology testing operation. That remains a potential strategic advantage rather than a confirmed plan.

Africa Becomes More Important to GiG

The deal also highlights the increasing strategic importance of African gambling markets.

GiG CFO Phil Richards said in September that owning 888AFRICA would give the company direct insight into areas including local regulation, player behavior and payment infrastructure.

That knowledge could also strengthen GiG's existing B2B business as more operators look at African expansion.

Managing the relationship between those two sides of the business would be a challenge.

GiG will now potentially provide technology to operators that could compete with its own consumer gambling operation in some markets. How the company separates those interests will therefore be worth watching.

A Bigger Strategic Move Than the €16.4 Million Price Suggests

At €16.4 million, the 888AFRICA transaction is relatively modest compared with the multibillion-euro gambling mergers currently reshaping Europe and North America. Strategically, however, it could be much more significant. GiG is moving from being primarily a company that builds gambling technology for other businesses to one that once again participates directly in the consumer gambling market.

It also gains a growing operation in markets where mobile gambling, localized payments and different regulatory structures create very different requirements from mature European jurisdictions.

Heading into 2027, the question will be whether 888AFRICA remains primarily an African growth investment or becomes something more important to GiG's wider strategy.

If the company successfully combines its technology capabilities with direct operational experience, the acquisition could create a model in which GiG owns both the gambling infrastructure and the business using it. For a company that has spent years emphasizing its B2B identity, that represents a notable change of direction.
