Women as a movement are a huge part of the global gambling industry, which is undergoing a major change. Mobile technology, artificial intelligence, stricter regulation, safer-gambling requirements and changing player demographics are altering not only how people gamble, but also who designs, regulates and leads gambling businesses.

One of the most significant changes is the growing influence of women. This influence should not, however, be reduced to the simple claim that "more women are gambling." The transformation is considerably broader. Women are increasingly visible in senior management, product development, compliance, responsible gaming, marketing and industry organizations. At the same time, female consumers represent an increasingly important audience for digital gambling products.

Yet the data reveal an important contradiction. Women remain underrepresented when it comes to senior leadership positions across gambling and iGaming, while female gambling participation is sufficiently substantial that operators can no longer reasonably design casino products around a predominantly male customer stereotype. The latest Gambling Survey for Great Britain, according to the UK Gambling Commission, reported that 44% of women had participated in gambling during the previous four weeks in 2025, compared with 51% of men. When lottery-only participation was removed, the respective rates were 24% for women and 30% for men.

Meanwhile, industry employment presents a different picture. The All-In Diversity Project has reported a gambling-sector gender split of approximately 65% male and 35% female in its 2024/25 data, highlighting a substantial representation gap. The result is one of iGaming's most interesting strategic questions for 2026: Can an industry with a rapidly diversifying customer base continue to operate with a comparatively less diverse leadership and technology workforce? Diva Jackpot's analysis suggests that this gap will become increasingly commercially important during 2027.

From Male-Dominated Industry to a More Diverse iGaming Economy

For much of modern gambling history, both gambling participation and gambling marketing were strongly associated with men. Sports betting reinforced this positioning. Traditional sportsbook advertising frequently centered on male sports audiences, while casino advertising often relied on stereotypes of glamour, wealth and female imagery rather than positioning women as informed consumers.

Digitalization has gradually disrupted that model. Online casinos let players enter the casino space without going to traditionally male-dominated physical betting environments. Mobile gambling allows consumers to play privately and conveniently, while products such as slots, bingo, lotteries, live casino and instant-win games appeal to significantly different demographic groups. The result is not necessarily a "female gambling revolution." Rather, the gambling market is becoming less demographically homogeneous.

UK Gambling Commission data illustrate this particularly well. In its 2025 annual survey, 59% of British adults reported gambling during the previous 12 months and 47% during the previous four weeks. Approximately 31 million adults were estimated to have gambled during the year. Women remained somewhat less likely to gamble than men, but the difference was far from enormous: 44% of women versus 51% of men participated during the previous four weeks. More importantly, preferences differed substantially.

Gambling Commission quarterly research found relatively little difference between male and female participation in scratchcards and online instant-win games, while betting showed a much larger gender divide: approximately 16% of men versus 4% of women reported betting during the previous four weeks in one 2025 survey wave. This suggests that gender differences are increasingly about product preference rather than simply whether somebody gambles at all.

Women Behind iGaming: Who Is Shaping the Industry in 2027?

Female influence is also becoming more visible within boardrooms, regulation, technology and industry organizations.

Stella David, CEO of Entain

One of the clearest examples is Stella David, CEO of Entain, one of the world's largest international betting and gaming groups. Her position is significant because female CEOs remain relatively uncommon among the largest publicly traded gambling operators. Entain operates internationally across online gaming and sports betting and provides technology to BetMGM through its joint venture. David's leadership therefore places a woman at the center of strategic decisions affecting one of the world's most influential gambling groups. Her appointment also illustrates a wider trend: women are increasingly moving beyond traditionally female-heavy departments such as HR and communications into roles involving corporate strategy, operations, technology, product and capital allocation.

Grainne Hurst, CEO of the Betting and Gaming Council

Another influential figure is Grainne Hurst, CEO of the UK's Betting and Gaming Council. Hurst's role is particularly relevant because the next phase of iGaming development will be shaped as much by regulation and responsible gambling as by casino product innovation. Before becoming CEO of the BGC, Hurst spent almost a decade at Entain and was involved in the group's safer-gambling strategy. She has also been involved with Global Gaming Women and its international expansion. Her position demonstrates how female leadership is becoming increasingly influential at the intersection of industry, regulation, government relations and player protection.

Christina Thakor-Rankin, All-In Diversity Project

Christina Thakor-Rankin, co-founder of the All-In Diversity Project, has helped push another issue onto the industry's agenda: measurement. Instead of treating diversity as a marketing statement, the organization's All-Index attempts to quantify diversity, equality, inclusion and belonging across participating gambling organizations. This becomes increasingly important as companies face scrutiny not simply over how many women they employ, but where those women sit within organizational hierarchies.

A Wider Generation of Female iGaming Leaders

The 2026 Women in Gaming Diversity Awards further demonstrate how broad female influence has become. Women recognized during 2026 came from organizations including Entain, Betsson Group, Bally's, Relax Gaming, IGT, Digitain, Games Global and LiveScore Group, among others. This matters because female influence is no longer concentrated within one corporate function. Women are increasingly represented across product, technology, customer experience, compliance, HR, operations, marketing and executive leadership. Global Gaming Women's 2025 annual report provides another indication of the expanding professional network supporting this development. The organization awarded 469 scholarships, launched 38 new Lean In Circles, held 19 global networking events and added more than 1,500 professionals to its membership during the year. These figures suggest that the female leadership pipeline is becoming more organized and international.

The Leadership Gap Has Not Disappeared

Celebrating prominent female leaders should not obscure the industry's remaining structural imbalance.
The American Gaming Association's workforce diversity research found that women represented approximately 47.5% of the US gaming workforce, broadly comparable with the wider national workforce.
However, female representation declined at higher organizational levels.
This pattern is not unique to the United States.
The All-In Diversity Project's research indicates that gambling remains significantly male-dominated. Its recent industry data point to approximately 65% male versus 35% female representation.
Betsson's 2025 annual report offers another useful corporate example. The company reported that four of the 15 members across its Group Management and Operational Management teams were women.
Therefore, the challenge entering 2027 is not simply recruitment.
It is progression.
Operators may increasingly need to measure:
  • female representation at entry, middle-management and executive levels;
  • promotion rates;
  • gender pay differences;
  • retention following parental leave;
  • representation within technology and product teams;
  • access to leadership development;
  • and female representation on corporate boards.
This is particularly relevant in Europe, where the EU Women on Boards framework is increasing pressure for improved gender balance among directors of large listed companies.

Women as Players: The Demographic Opportunity

The commercial implications extend far beyond employment.
Female gambling participation represents a major addressable market, but operators should be cautious about assuming that "casino for women" means pink interfaces, stereotypical slot themes or female-focused advertising.
The more significant opportunity lies in product design and customer understanding.
Women may respond differently to gambling formats, motivations, marketing channels and social environments. Gambling Commission evidence, for example, shows substantially lower female participation in traditional betting but much smaller differences in scratchcards and instant-win products.
For casino operators, this creates opportunities around:

Mobile-First Casino Design

Mobile removes several barriers associated with physical gambling venues and allows customers to access entertainment privately.
A frictionless mobile casino, transparent payment journey and intuitive interface may therefore be more important than gender-specific visual branding.

Entertainment Rather Than Sports-Led Acquisition

The traditional betting funnel often starts with sports.
Female acquisition strategies may increasingly begin elsewhere: casino games, bingo, social gaming, entertainment partnerships, lifestyle content, live casino or casual instant-win formats.

Personalisation

Artificial intelligence could accelerate this transition.
Instead of assuming preferences according to gender, operators can increasingly personalise lobbies according to demonstrated behaviour.
The best "casino for women" may ultimately be one that does not stereotype women at all.
It simply understands individual players better.

Is the Gambling Audience Getting Younger?

Age requires particular attention.
The 2025 Gambling Survey for Great Britain found that overall gambling participation was highest among adults aged approximately 45–64. However, once lottery-only players were removed, the demographic profile became substantially younger.
Participation in non-lottery gambling was highest among people aged approximately 25–44.
Among women specifically, one 2025 Gambling Commission wave found that non-lottery gambling participation peaked among those aged 35–44, at around 33%.
This distinction matters.
An industry analyst looking only at total gambling participation might conclude that gambling remains predominantly middle-aged. Looking specifically at online casino, sports betting and other commercial gambling products produces a younger picture.
The strategic market is therefore gradually becoming more digital, mobile and potentially younger.
That creates commercial opportunity, but also greater responsibility.

The Other Side of Growth: Women and Gambling Harm

Growth among female players cannot responsibly be discussed without considering gambling harm. Research commissioned by GambleAware and conducted by the University of Bristol concluded that women's gambling participation had been increasing and identified younger women and women from some minority ethnic backgrounds as potentially more vulnerable to gambling harms. The research also highlighted stigma and shame as barriers that can prevent women from seeking assistance.

Economic pressure creates another risk. GambleAware research found that 24% of women aged 18–49 who gambled expected to gamble more during the cost-of-living crisis, while 12% reported having gambled in an attempt to supplement household income. Around 21% reported gambling-related stress or anxiety. This is particularly concerning because gambling should never be promoted as a method of solving financial difficulties.

Research into young adults also shows that the gender picture is complex rather than uniform. Among people aged 18–24 in GambleAware analysis covering 2022–2024, approximately 27.4% of young men compared with 14.7% of young women recorded PGSI [The Problem Gambling Severity Index] 1+, while PGSI 8+ was approximately 10.5% among men and 4.8% among women. Men therefore remain more likely to display measurable gambling problems within this young-adult dataset. However, harm cannot be measured solely by gambling expenditure. Financial stress, relationships, mental wellbeing, caring responsibilities and stigma can create different consequences for different demographic groups. The strategic lesson for operators is important: Female market growth must not become female-targeted exploitation.

Geographic Analysis: Where Could Female iGaming Growth Matter Most?

iGaming Europe

Europe is likely to remain at the centre of both female leadership and responsible-gambling development. According to the European Gaming and Betting Association and H2 Gambling Capital, European online gambling gross gaming revenue was projected to increase from approximately €47.9 billion in 2024 to €54.8 billion in 2026, before reaching approximately €59.1 billion in 2027. That implies approximately 7.8% projected year-on-year growth in European online GGR [ Gross Gaming Reveniew ] between 2026 and 2027.

Digital adoption therefore remains a structural growth driver. At the same time, Europe is introducing stronger governance, advertising, affordability and player-protection expectations. Operators able to combine inclusive product design with strong responsible-gambling systems could gain a reputational advantage.

iGaming United Kingdom

The UK provides some of the world's strongest publicly available gambling demographic data. Its relatively small male-female participation gap demonstrates that women already represent a mainstream gambling consumer segment rather than a niche audience. The opportunity is consequently not simply acquiring more female players. It is understanding what women want from digital gambling and how risks differ between demographic groups.

iGaming United States

US gaming employment is already relatively gender balanced overall, according to AGA data, but senior-level representation remains an opportunity. Meanwhile, continuing state-by-state development of regulated sports betting and iGaming creates opportunities for women in product, compliance, technology, marketing and executive leadership.

iGaming Emerging Markets

Emerging markets such as Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia represent significant longer-term opportunities because of mobile adoption and expanding digital-payment infrastructure. However, operators should avoid assuming that European or North American gender patterns can simply be replicated globally. Cultural attitudes toward women, financial independence, gambling, sport and mobile payments vary dramatically.Localization must therefore include gender and cultural analysis rather than translation alone.

Diva Jackpot 2027 Forecast: What Happens Next?

Forecasting demographic change is inherently uncertain. Diva Jackpot therefore treats the following as scenario-based expectations rather than established outcomes.

Prediction 1: Female Participation Will Continue to Normalize

Rather than a dramatic surge in female gambling, the more likely development is gradual convergence in selected digital gambling categories. Women should increasingly be treated as part of the mainstream online casino audience.

Prediction 2: Female Leadership Becomes a Governance Metric

Companies will face increasing pressure to demonstrate not simply workforce diversity but executive-level diversity. Board composition, promotion rates and senior management representation are likely to receive more attention from investors, employees and regulators.

Prediction 3: AI Makes Gender-Based Casino Segmentation Less Important

The next generation of casino personalization may be less focused on categories such as "male player" and "female player." Behavioral systems can instead determine whether an individual prefers jackpots, live casino, low-volatility slots, instant games, sports betting, or particular payment methods. Gender becomes one analytical variable rather than the marketing strategy itself.

Prediction 4: Responsible Gambling Becomes More Demographically Intelligent

Safer-gambling systems are likely to become more personalized. Future risk models could consider changes in deposit frequency, session length, failed deposits, night-time play, chasing behavior and unusual spending patterns rather than relying mainly on universal thresholds. The important ethical requirement will be ensuring that AI is used not only to maximize engagement but also to identify risk.

Prediction 5: Women's Sports Creates a New Betting Economy

The continued commercial expansion of women's football, basketball, tennis and other professional sports creates a significant opportunity for betting companies. But operators should not assume women's sport automatically creates female bettors. The audience is likely to be mixed, and responsible marketing will remain essential.

Women Are Not a Niche Market in iGaming

Perhaps the biggest mistake iGaming companies can make in 2026 is treating women as a new niche. Women are already players, executives, regulators, developers, marketers, researchers, compliance specialists, founders and product leaders.

The transformation lies in their growing influence. Industry data nevertheless expose a paradox. Female gambling participation in mature markets such as Great Britain is approaching the scale of male participation, while the industry's workforce and particularly its senior leadership remain considerably more male-dominated. That imbalance represents both a challenge and an opportunity.

By 2027, the most competitive casino companies may not necessarily be those running the largest "women-focused" marketing campaigns. They may instead be businesses capable of understanding a diverse customer base without stereotyping it. That means building inclusive products, employing diverse teams, investing in female leadership, improving research into gambling behavior and making responsible gambling part of product design.

For Diva Jackpot, the evolution of women in iGaming should therefore be viewed through two lenses simultaneously: commercial opportunity and responsibility. More women in gambling should not simply mean more women being encouraged to spend. It should mean more women designing products, leading companies, shaping regulation, researching player behaviour and determining what the next generation of iGaming looks like. And that may ultimately prove to be the more important transformation.
