For decades, the stereotypical gambler presented by the industry was male. Sportsbooks were built around male-dominated sports audiences, casino advertising often relied on male-focused imagery, and even responsible-gambling research frequently treated men as the default high-risk customer. That model is becoming increasingly outdated.
Female players are not simply a new demographic for operators to acquire. They are becoming important to how the online gambling industry develops its products, interfaces, marketing strategies and player-protection systems.
The numbers already indicate why. The UK Gambling Commission's latest participation statistics, covering September 2025 to January 2026, found that 44% of women had gambled during the previous four weeks, compared with 49% of men. More interestingly, the gender gap virtually disappeared for some products, including scratchcards and online instant-win games. Betting remained much more male-dominated, with participation of 13% among men versus 4% among women.
This suggests that asking whether women gamble "as much as men" misses the more important question. What do women gamble on, how do they interact with digital casinos, and what happens as operators start designing products around a more diverse player base?
That matters because mobile gambling removes several characteristics traditionally associated with gambling. There is no casino floor. No sportsbook counter. No need to enter an environment that may historically have felt designed predominantly for men. Instead, a casino becomes another application or mobile website competing for attention alongside streaming, gaming, social media, shopping and entertainment. This change potentially lowers the cultural barrier to participation for demographic groups previously less associated with traditional gambling venues, including women.
GambleAware's research has already concluded that women's online gambling participation in Great Britain has grown rapidly, while research conducted by the University of Bristol found increasing female participation and highlighted younger women as one group requiring particular attention in relation to gambling harm.
The future opportunity therefore lies in understanding behavior rather than stereotypes. Operators should be analyzing questions such as:
EGBA and H2 Gambling Capital project European online gambling GGR at approximately €54.8 billion in 2026, rising to €59.1 billion in 2027. By 2029, online GGR is forecast to reach €66.8 billion. Meanwhile, mobile's share of European online gambling revenue is projected to rise from 58% in 2024 to 67% by 2029.
This changes the competitive environment. A casino competing for a woman using her smartphone is not only competing with another casino. It is competing against the usability standards established by Netflix, Instagram, Spotify, banking apps, and e-commerce. For female audiences, particularly younger digital-native customers, cumbersome registration, confusing bonus conditions and outdated interfaces could increasingly become commercial disadvantages.
As psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos explained during GambleAware's women's gambling-harm campaign,
Diva Jackpot expects three developments to become particularly important. First, female customer segmentation will become more sophisticated. Age, product preference, geography, payment behavior, and playing frequency will increasingly matter more than gender alone. Second, AI-driven casino personalization will make it possible to create substantially different lobbies and promotional journeys for individual users. The ethical question will be whether that technology improves discovery and player protection or simply becomes better at maximizing gambling expenditure. Third, responsible gambling will become part of female customer experience design rather than a compliance page hidden in a website footer. Deposit controls, session information, spending visibility, cooling-off functionality and non-stigmatizing support could become genuine indicators of casino quality.

The Female Gambling Market Is No Longer a Niche
Female participation has been developing alongside the industry's wider migration from physical gambling to smartphones. European online gambling revenue reached approximately €47.9 billion in 2024, representing 39% of Europe's total gambling market. Casino games generated €21.5 billion of that online revenue. More importantly for future product strategy, mobile devices already generated approximately 58% of European online gambling revenue. Different Products, Not Simply Different Players
One of the industry's mistakes would be to assume that attracting female customers means turning casino websites pink or developing stereotypically "female" slot themes. The data points toward something considerably more sophisticated. UKGC [United Kingdom Gambling Commission] statistics show relatively little gender difference in participation in online instant-win games, yet a significant difference in sports betting. This implies that product category can matter more than gender alone. The future opportunity therefore lies in understanding behavior rather than stereotypes. Operators should be analyzing questions such as:
- Are female players discovering games differently?
- Do session lengths vary?
- Which casino categories produce the strongest retention?
- How important are mobile UX, payment simplicity and privacy?
- Do loyalty programs appeal equally to male and female customers?
- Are safer-gambling communications equally effective across genders?
2026: Women Meet the Mobile-First Casino
The most important structural development in 2026 is arguably not gender itself. It is the convergence of female participation and mobile-first gambling.EGBA and H2 Gambling Capital project European online gambling GGR at approximately €54.8 billion in 2026, rising to €59.1 billion in 2027.
Geography Matters: There Is No Single Female Gambler
Operators also need to avoid treating women as one international demographic. Europe alone demonstrates enormous differences in digital gambling maturity. Online gambling represented approximately 68.3% of total gambling revenue in Sweden, compared with only 14.2% in Spain in the latest comparable EGBA/H2 country data. Finland and Denmark were also highly digitalized at approximately 68.1%. Female acquisition strategies that work in digitally mature Nordic markets therefore cannot automatically be transferred to Southern Europe, North America or emerging markets. Culture, disposable income, regulation, payment infrastructure, smartphone penetration and attitudes toward gambling all matter. The strongest operators heading into 2027 may consequently move away from the idea of a universal "female casino campaign" and toward localized female audience intelligence.Gambling Harm Among Women
The World Health Organization estimates that 1.2% of the world's adult population has a gambling disorder. It also reports estimates that around 5.5% of women and 11.9% of men globally experience some level of gambling harm. Men therefore remain more exposed statistically, but female gambling harm presents particular challenges. Research commissioned by GambleAware has found that shame and stigma can make women reluctant to discuss gambling problems. In one study, 32% of women who gambled said they would be reluctant to discuss concerns with family members, while 63% believed women's gambling was viewed as less socially acceptable than men's gambling. This is particularly significant for online gambling because problematic behavior can remain almost invisible. A player no longer needs to visit a casino or betting shop. Gambling can happen privately on a phone. As psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos explained during GambleAware's women's gambling-harm campaign,
“We cannot underestimate the role that stigma plays in preventing women from seeking support.”The quotation comes from GambleAware's research and campaign examining gambling harms among women during the cost-of-living crisis. The implication for operators is clear, female-market growth without gender-aware player protection would be commercially short-sighted and socially irresponsible.
A Female-Focused SWOT for Online Casino Operators
| Strenghts | Weaknesses |
| Female participation broadens the addressable casino audience. | Limited gender-specific behavioural research in many markets. |
| Mobile gambling removes some barriers associated with traditional casino environments. | Operators can easily fall into superficial gender stereotypes. |
| Instant-win and casino products already demonstrate relatively balanced participation in some markets. | Responsible-gambling messaging may fail to recognise female-specific stigma and barriers to help. |
| Opportunities | Threats |
| Better mobile UX and personalised game discovery. | Increased gambling harm as access becomes more frictionless. |
| Female-led communities, editorial content and loyalty strategies. | Regulatory restrictions on targeting vulnerable audiences. |
| Gender-aware responsible-gambling tools and communication. | Reputational damage from predatory or stereotypical marketing. |
| Localised strategies for mature digital markets. | AI personalisation optimised for spending rather than player welfare. |
What Changes in the Gambling Demographic in 2027?
Our base-case outlook is not that women suddenly overtake men as the largest gambling demographic in 2027. Available evidence does not justify that conclusion. Something subtler is happening. As online gambling becomes increasingly mobile, personalized and entertainment-led, some of the structural characteristics that historically made gambling disproportionately male are becoming less relevant.Diva Jackpot expects three developments to become particularly important.
Female Players Could Change the Product, Not Just the Market Size
The importance of women to online gambling should therefore not be measured solely by the percentage of female accounts. Their significance is potentially much larger. Female participation challenges an industry historically designed around assumptions about who a gambler is, what they play and how gambling should be marketed. The casino of 2027 may consequently look less like a digital recreation of a traditional casino and more like a personalized entertainment platform: mobile, visually sophisticated, socially aware and highly customized. For operators, the opportunity is considerable. But the winning strategy is unlikely to involve simply advertising more aggressively to women. It will involve understanding them better. And for an industry entering a period in which European online gambling alone is forecast to approach €59.1 billion in 2027, understanding a demographic representing roughly half of the adult population is no longer optional.References / Works Cited
