New South Wales, Australia, is intensifying enforcement of mandatory slot machine shutdown hours, as regulators move to ensure pubs and clubs comply with restrictions designed to reduce continuous gambling.

On October 12, 2026, Liquor & Gaming NSW announced a targeted compliance campaign covering venues operating electronic gaming machines, commonly known in Australia as pokies.

The enforcement initiative follows the removal of historical shutdown exemptions affecting more than 650 venues. Under the current rules, gaming machines must generally be switched off between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. daily, unless a venue holds a valid exception.

The regulator has reviewed 51 venues, with another 70 under assessment. Two venues have received fines, one has been issued an official caution, and another has been referred for disciplinary action.

Regulators Turn to Data and Inspections

The latest campaign reflects a more proactive approach to gambling supervision.

Rather than relying exclusively on complaints or routine inspections, Liquor & Gaming NSW is using data analysis, venue records and targeted inspections to identify potential breaches of mandatory shutdown requirements.

The restrictions are intended to create a daily break in gambling activity and limit access to gaming machines during early morning hours.

The removal of older exemptions also means hundreds of venues can no longer rely on historical permissions to operate outside standard shutdown periods.

Importantly, the enforcement figures do not mean that all 650 affected venues violated the rules. They refer to venues that lost previous exemptions, while penalties have been imposed in specific cases following compliance checks.

Could Australia Introduce Tougher Gambling Restrictions in 2027?

The enforcement campaign comes as New South Wales reviews its existing gaming machine shutdown hours.

That review could eventually result in changes to the hours during which pubs and clubs may offer slot machine gambling, although no additional restrictions have been confirmed.

The development is significant because Australia has one of the world's most established land-based electronic gaming machine markets, making changes to operating hours particularly relevant to operators and gambling-harm prevention policy.

For international regulators, the New South Wales approach also offers an alternative to outright gambling prohibition by limiting access through mandatory operating breaks and enforcing those restrictions using technology and compliance data.

Whether longer shutdown periods meaningfully reduce gambling harm remains a question for policymakers and researchers.

For 2027, the issue to watch is whether New South Wales moves beyond enforcing existing requirements and introduces a more restrictive operating-hours framework.

The immediate conclusion is that mandatory gambling shutdown hours are enforceable operating conditions and are not simply guidelines.
